Malik was one of a rare few brothas who preferred to live in Frisco’s Castro, not because it was gay, but because of its beautiful scenery and convenience to work on the MUNI train. Once outside, Malik took Todd’s hand, daring him to resist. If he manned up, he wouldn’t really give a fuck. Todd’s boys, if really straight, wouldn’t be caught dead in the Castro anyhow. And being an indie rapper, few people at the gay joint would have ever been exposed to his work. Only serious underground heads would have recognized Todd.

“I’m up the hill,” Malik tugged. After a few hand-held stops and taking a pause at the corner of Nineteenth and Collingwood, Todd picked the larger Malik clean off his feet. “Damn. So you gonna really act gay and try to sweep a brotha off his feet, huh?”

After some feigned protest, Todd put Malik back on his feet, kissing him in the center of the crosswalk. “Tonight, I just don’t give a fuck, you know. Sometimes I get tired of givin’ a fuck.”

There was something very powerful and emotional in the statement, but Malik knew better than to probe. Crossing the street, they locked eyes again.

“I ain’t scared to hold your hand,” Todd continued. “Some of my best friends are gay,” he belted, sharing knee-slapping laughter with Malik, who threw caution to the wind, let go of his demands that the men he date be “out,” and let himself fall alongside Todd. Besides, Todd was not yet even a date, just a moment of perfection in a life filled with more drama and pain than peace of mind.

The short three-block walk up the Hill was tiring, not so much because the men were winded, but anxious to wrestle and rest with each other. Not soon after Malik opened the door, did Todd push Malik to the sofa and drop to his knees. In the same moment he reached for Malik’s zipper, not even taking a moment to inspect the place, since he had learned on the walk that Malik lived alone.

“Easy now,” Malik said. “Let’s take our time with this. Besides, I don’t really even know if we’re compatible.”

“We are,” Todd replied, taking Malik’s fullness into his warm mouth for a tease before saying, “You’re a man. I’m a man. You diggin’ me, right? We’re compatible.”

“But I’m a …”

“You’re man enough to let me make love to you tonight. So shut up with all that categorizing! This ain’t Paris’ ball.”

Todd forcefully interrupted Malik’s laughter, who was surprised that Todd would even know anything about gay ball culture. He kissed Malik passionately before there could be any protest of his hand gripping Malik’s ass. And while Malik had not been one to give up control in such situations, this was a different test of his manhood. He knew that he’d reach new plateaus if he could only be man enough to be vulnerable with this man. As gay and out as he’d been, he still had his hang-ups and masculinity issues but, somehow, Todd disarmed them all.
